Up to now Basque researchers haven’t  devoted much attention to the key role of the figure “Fourteen” within the context of Basque cosmology. With the object of finding out the role of “Fourteen” within that ursine cosmology, we have to start bringing to mind that the believing in an ursine genealogy-that the bear is a relative or ancestor of mankind- is quite common within populations of hunter-gatherers in Euskal Herria but also within Siberians and Amerindians.  It is quite difficult to believe agro-pastoral background populations devising an ursine ancestor.

It is very bright the possibility of conceiving the figure of “Fourteen” as the mediator between these two worlds, the animal and mankind. And if being so, we would be in front of oral tradition materials that at the beginning described the life and miracles of this being which appears gifted with special powers, miraculous and/or supernatural (among them the power of transforming into different animals).

The relation among the bear and other animals belongs to the ursine cosmology where appear more tales and specifically the  meeting  of “Fourteen” with four animals who will be his Guardian Animals ( a Mountain Lion, a Dog, an Eagle, and an Ant) and later on the way in which he will receive the carbuncles that will be a part of his Medicine Bundle.  This is a typical element that use to get the young Amerindians when undertake a Vision Quest.

Goitia Blanco Javier, is an engineer and geographer born in Bermeo who has worked in the last 39 years on foot Iberian place names and has concluded that the abandonment of this source would leave potential Basque history without an indispensable material resource.

For his work, he has been supported by a database of National Geographic Institute with over 1,500,000 place names that he has worked with searching programs, getting back to more than 1,500 language nouns, adjectives, suffixes and endings that he has collected in the book “the DNA of Basque” to be published soon. This research work represents a whole lifetime.

The publication and distribution will be done through Libros.com, where is necessary to achieve the commitment of at least 50 people. We suggest  you entering the address below and supportig the edition. Libros.com-El ADN del euskera

That’s the revelation recently released by another linguist and defender of the authenticity of the graffiti, Juan Martin Elexpuru: that Txillardegi believed them to be true.
